An Attractive District in Boston..
Renowned as one of Boston’s most historically acclaimed neighbourhoods, Beacon Hill is an area that covers just about one square mile. Beacon Hill is home to only 10,000 people and has a fusion of impressive townhouses and chic shops. Well known for its narrow streets Beacon Hill is recognized as one of the most sought-after and costly neighbourhoods in the country.
This historically rich district has some well maintained and attractive houses which nearly all are made in brick. Most houses carry Victorian, Federal and Georgian styles. Beacon Hill is also well known for its brick sidewalks and gas-lit streets which are low in traffic.
Until the latter part of the 18th century, painter John Singleton Copley owned the south slope of Beacon Hill. However, Copley sold it to the Mount Vernon Proprietors that belonged to architect Charles Bulfinch who designed residences on the south slope. Beacon Hill was completely developed during the mid 19th century. Increased in popularity, Beacon Hill attracted many rich Bostonians. In December 19, 1962, Beacon Hill was named a National Historic Landmark.
The most famous construction on Beacon Hill is the State House. Built by Charles Bulfinch in 1795 the dome is sheltered with 23 and a half carat gold leaf. Other significant attractions in Beacon Hill include Louisburg Square, Charles Street Meeting House, Suffolk University and Park Street Church.
