Inverness, widely called the capital city of the Highlands of Scotland, was ceremoniously granted city status in 2001 and at this time is the only city to be found in the Highlands of Scotland. Unusually Inverness has no legal boundaries which can cause problems with population  estimation. The estimations are less likely to be accurate because the population in increasing dramatically, the city has the highest growth rate of any city in Great Britain.
